Detox Foods: Are Apples All That..?

When you search online, you’ll see that apples have been promoted to help detox metals and food additives that have been accumulating in your body, along with a hundred different claims… so should you be eating them?

Well, the antioxidants found in apples can help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals, a major contributor to skin ageing (that deep red peel of the apple is extra-antioxidant because it contains cyanidins!) and brittle nails can often be improved with the integration of apples because they contain a good amount of silicon..

However, that pectin that is often promoted as the ‘grabber’ of the toxins in your body.. well it’s not ideal for everyone. The pectin content in apples can actually reduce the absorbtion of iron, zinc, magnesium and calcium which may not be ideal and it’s also another one of those diuretics foods – not great for replenishing or rejuvenating those wrinkles!

Apples can also be hard to digest and cause irritation in the gut and in some cases, can even create a histaminic reaction in the body… tension in the head, swelling below the eyelids, runny nose – all that jazz..

So, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ may not be true for everybody..! It might even be better to avoid apples during your detox if they will cause discomfort and reactions in your body!

So should YOU eat them…?
